Can you walk away?

If your house is on fire, would you rush into the conflagration to grab things or would you be ready to walk away from everything? Of course, we would first ensure the safety of loved ones. Everything else will be lost in the blaze. Working on this supposition, I thought of looking at this situation from different perspectives. We humans are like leeches who attach to something or someone and find it difficult to let go. Being able to walk away at a moment’s notice from material things, ideas, plans, and even people is a code of life that sounds arduous. But can we do so?
John Green in his novel ‘Looking for Alaska’ writes, “People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason the world is in chaos, is because things are being loved and people are being used.” In a world driven by consumption, it’s hard to realize that having more doesn’t really make one happy. When I do a major house cleaning, I chuck out about everything I don’t use which is truly liberating. A simple lifestyle makes our lives more flexible.
We are all prone to stick with ideas and plans that no longer serve us. Over time our ideas and plans must change or refine to help us grow. Our readiness to walk away from old ideas shows our willingness to grow. Pursuing something that doesn’t make us happy is only going to make us forlorn.
Finally, can we be persuaded to walk away from loving a fellow-creature? I would certainly argue to reject such an idea even if the cost is misery. Love has no safe investment and no one can love anybody just because the security is better. This jogs my memory about how the passing of my mum plunged me in grief 15 years ago. All human loves pass away, so it’s unwise to think that we have insurances against heartbreak. I believe that natural loves are about doing, not having.
Everything else is drama and we can walk away from those who tend to walk over you. Some might walk out on you and some cease to be. There'll always be someone who walk with you and walk beside you in quantum unison.
Cheerio!
